Traditional metal wired braces are made of stainless steel alloy and are the most widely used due to effectiveness and cost. These types of braces include conventional braces which require ties to hold the archwire in place, and newer self-tying (or self-ligating) brackets. Self-ligating brackets may reduce friction between the wire and the slot of the bracket, which might be of benefit. In some cases other metals are used in combination with stainless steel such as titanium, nickel and even gold. Today’s metal bracket systems are designed to be much smaller than those used years ago and can be completely customized to the anatomy of your teeth.
