When you get braces there are certain policies you should follow to keep your braces intact and working the way they should.
Gum
You may chew SUGARLESS GUM only. It will help stop soreness and aid tooth movement.
Foods
Do not eat any of the following:
- nuts
- ice
- ribs
- popcorn
- corn on the cob
- hard or sticky candies
- chips (with the exception of Lays)
Brushing Your Teeth
Use a Soft Bristle Toothbrush Only! Now that you have your braces it will take a little more time to brush properly. There are a few simple steps to follow:
- Take the perio-probe and go between each brace. This probe will remove food as well as plaque. Your toothbrush cannot clean these areas properly. This procedure will need to be done at least 2 times a day.
- Take your soft bristle toothbrush and run it under hot water. This will make the bristle softer so good gum massaging can be done. Do not use any toothpaste for this part of the cleaning. Place the toothbrush on your gums making a small circular motion. Do Not Scrub! This procedure should be done at least 2 times a day.
- Put toothpaste on your toothbrush and brush regularly. Make sure that you brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
A Water Pic may be used to AID in cleaning but it does not take the place of brushing.
Flossing may be done using a floss threader or using SUPER FLOSS.
The care of your appliances is very important. When you get your braces, take a good look at the way they are in your mouth. If you should notice that something has come loose or has broken away from your tooth, contact our office immediately. If at any time during your treatment you should have something begin to stick you or bother you in any way, call us immediately. Your appliances will only work if they are in the exact place that we put them. Broken or damaged appliances will only prolong your treatment time.
