The Damon® system is a type of self-ligating braces, but the fitting is the same as with traditional braces. The difference is in the brackets. Traditional braces have brackets requiring regular adjustments and tightening. A sliding mechanism is used by the Damon® system. The mechanism moves more naturally as the teeth begin to move into the correct positions. This mechanism attaches the brackets and the wires. This means the teeth are realigned in less time, the braces have a better aesthetic appearance and they are a lot more comfortable. The method used to move the teeth into the correct positions is different than with traditional braces.
The braces use a memory wire to connect to the slide brackets. This produces less pressure than the elastics used for traditional braces. This enables the teeth to move gradually as opposed to the force essential for traditional braces. This force can make palatal expanders and tooth extractions necessary. The self-ligating braces are a different type of orthodontic treatment. Instead of using elastic bands to attach the brackets and the arch wires, there is a component on the actual bracket to ensure the wire remains attached because it closes around the wire.
The Benefits of the Damon® System
There are a lot of significant benefits to the Damon® system as opposed to traditional braces. The metal system brackets used with this system are far less obvious than the brackets necessary for the traditional braces. The Damon® system also offers clear versions. This makes them almost invisible and offers better aesthetics. This is important for both teenagers and adults. Adults are often concerned braces will make them appear less business-like at their places of employment. Teenagers often become self-conscious when wearing braces that are easily seen. This system enables the individual to relax and forget they are even wearing braces.
Another important benefit is the length of time necessary for treatment is effectively decreased with this system. A study was conducted regarding individuals using this system. The results showed that the treatment time was decreased by a minimum of six months with this system when compared to the traditional metal braces. The number of dental appointments dropped by almost 48 percent. Another study showed that the participants using the Damon® system completed their treatment seven months sooner than the participants with traditional metal braces. This system saves valuable time because less time is spent at the office changing stained elastic bands or making adjustments.
The teeth move more freely with this system. Not only does this decrease the treatment time, but it makes the process a lot more comfortable as well. Less friction helps eliminate the deterioration and erosion of the teeth. The braces also have less areas for bacteria and plaque to accumulate. This means keeping the teeth clean through brushing and flossing is easier.
