The AcceleDent® device has been approved to straighten teeth by the Food and Drug Administration. It uses cyclic forces and soft pulse technology to move the teeth as much as fifty percent faster. The device was launched in 2012 in the United States. This therapy is adjunctive and combined with standard orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign®, clear braces and metal braces. The process is non-invasive, non-surgical, removable, portable, and decreases discomfort. The mouthpiece is connected to the activator to vibrate gently with a force 200 times less than chewing. The speed of the micropulses accelerates the movements of the teeth and the speed of bone remodeling as opposed to static and constant pressure.
A portion of the orthodontic treatment involves using different wires for the aligning and leveling stages. Leveling is when the teeth are moved to the same height. Aligning is when they are moved into the proper position. When Invisalign® and AcceleDent® are used together, the aligner trays must be changed more frequently to straighten teeth.
Using AcceleDent®
Using the device is easy. Once it is plugged into the activator, it is attached to the mouthpiece. The individual puts the device into their mouth and bites down. This ensures contact for all sides while keeping the device in place. The session lasts for twenty to thirty minutes. Since hands are not required to hold the device in place, the person has their choice of activities during the process. There is even a daily usage graph and usage report for accountability.
